The Wall Is Yours – Graffiti & Street Art Takeover
Van 4 april t/m 12 juli transformeerden we, in samenwerking met het Fries Museum, de grootste zaal van het museum tot een bruisende, experimentele vrijplaats waar ontmoeting en participatie centraal stonden. Het was: een experiment als geen ander. Een (wereldwijde) primeur. En bovenal, een liefdesbrief aan vrijheid en expressie. We openden de deuren voor twaalf (inter)nationale kunstenaars én voor het publiek. Iedereen was vrij om bij te dragen. De muren waren constant in beweging.
Zes thema’s liepen als een rode draad door de takeover: de oorsprong van graffiti, politiek en activisme in street art, grafische street art, comic culture, (foto)realisme en community art. Tijdens de takeover werden veel activiteiten georganiseerd. Er waren feestjes, workshops, talks en optredens – de zaal werd een ontmoetingsplek voor een nieuwe doelgroep!
Het experiment bewijst dat, wanneer vrijheid onbeperkt is, iedereen iets te vertellen heeft.

From April 4 through July 12, we transformed the Fries Museum’s largest hall into a vibrant, experimental free space where encounter and participation took center stage. It was; an experiment like no other. A (world) first. And above all, a love letter to freedom and expression. We opened the doors to twelve (inter)national artists and to the public. Everyone was free to contribute. The walls were constantly in motion.
Six themes ran through the takeover like a common thread: the origins of graffiti, politics and activism in street art, graphic street art, comic culture, (photo)realism, and community art. Throughout the takeover, many activities were organized. There were parties, workshops, talks, and performances – the room became a meeting place for a new audience!
The experiment proves that, when freedom is unlimited, everyone has something to say.
