NL: Marloes de Kiewit – ‘Pedals & Peelings’
Kunstenares Marloes de Kiewit heeft de containers in de Uniabuurt getransformeerd! Met deze kleurrijke containers in de buurt is vuilnis weggooien bijná een echt feestje.
Marloes: “In deze straat heeft de kunstenaar Alma-Tadema ooit gewoond. Ik ben mij gaan verdiepen in zijn werk en voelde mij aangetrokken tot zijn schilderij ‘The Roses of Heliogabalus’ uit 1888. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt het een dromerig, romantisch tafereel, maar achter die schoonheid gaat een duister verhaal schuil.
De achtergrond van mijn schildering verwijst naar de duizenden rozenblaadjes en andere kleuren uit het palet van dit werk. Met sierlijke witte lijnen heb ik elementen toegevoegd die in het oorspronkelijke schilderij verborgen zitten. Ik heb bewust gezocht naar een kleur in mijn achtergrond die harmonieert met de donkerrode raamkozijnen van het straatbeeld.
Vuilnisbakken zijn vaak sombere objecten in het straatbeeld, zeker wanneer er afval omheen ligt. Met mijn schildering hoop ik dit beeld te verzachten, te verbloemen, zoals Alma-Tadema dat ooit deed met zijn bijzondere werk.”

Marloes: “The artist Alma-Tadema once lived on this street. I immersed myself in his work and was drawn to his painting ‘The Roses of Heliogabalus’ from 1888. At first glance, it appears to be a dreamy, romantic scene, but behind that beauty lies a dark story.
The background of my painting helps to evoke the rose petals and other colors from the palette of the original painting. With graceful white lines, I added elements hidden in the artwork. I deliberately sought a color in my background that harmonized with the dark red window frames of the streetscape.
Trash cans are often somber objects in the streetscape, especially when they are surrounded by trash. With my painting, I hope to soften and disguise this image, just as Alma-Tadema once did with his remarkable work.”
