StudioZEPA: “The painting symbolizes a transfer of skills from older generations to the youth. It also highlights the historical significance of Leeuwarden and some attractions, like the carper fish.
We draw upon the metaphor of “the little foxes and the foxhole”, not only because many children are coming and going from the school right next to the mural, but also to make an obvious connection with the name of the area (Vossepark/ “Foxpark”).
On the front walls, we see a grandfather placing a wind turbine on a globe with his granddaughter. This links with generational knowledge as well as green energy and a cleaner future. There is also a young girl wearing a beanie looking out over the Oldehove building. Is she wondering what it is, or looking at it with admiration? Either way, this brings in the theme of looking back to understand how Leeuwarden became what it is today.
Attention is drawn to the cultural elements of Leeuwarden by juxtaposing the size of some objects, like the boat in the boy’s hand and the carper fish. This is done to bring an element of humor to the artwork but also depicts elements of the famous waterways packed with boats and fishing in the area.
The use of color mimics stained glass and creates an abstract aesthetic at times. This allows the artwork to be interpreted, and to unpack itself over time as one notices new details each time they pass by. The colors also reflect the colors of the neighborhood.

Op de voorgevels zien we een grootvader die samen met zijn kleindochter een windmolen op een wereldbol plaatst. Dit legt de link met generatiekennis en groene energie en een schonere toekomst. Er is ook een jong meisje met een muts op dat uitkijkt over de Oldehove (bekend gebouw in Leeuwarden). Vraagt ze zich af wat het is, of kijkt ze er vol bewondering naar? Hoe dan ook, dit brengt het thema van terugblikken om te begrijpen hoe Leeuwarden is geworden wat het nu is.
De aandacht wordt gevestigd op culturele elementen van Leeuwarden. Door de grootte van sommige voorwerpen naast elkaar te zetten, zoals de boot in de hand van de jongen en de karpervis brengen we een element van humor in het kunstwerk, maar het toont ook elementen van de beroemde waterwegen vol boten en visserij in het gebied.
Het kleurgebruik doet denken aan glas-in-lood en creëert soms een abstracte esthetiek. Dit zorgt ervoor dat het kunstwerk geïnterpreteerd kan worden en zich in de loop van de tijd ontvouwt als je telkens nieuwe details opmerkt. De kleuren weerspiegelen ook de kleuren van de buurt.
Op deze manier wordt het kunstwerk geïnspireerd door en inspireert het de gemeenschap, haar omgeving en cultuur.”
